Style Considerations

  • This style of wall uses special geotextile bags filled with sand.
  • Once filled, they are positioned to form sea groynes as well as retaining walls and erosion protection walls.
  • The term 'soft rock' was coined to demonstrate the huge difference between the geotextile bags used and the traditional concept of a sandbag.
  • Expected life of the 'soft rock' wall is at least 20 years.

Recommended Locations

  • Most commonly used for coastline protection work.
  • Also used in estuaries and canals.
  • They provide environmentally friendly solutions for a variety of other hydraulic engineering problems e.g. gabion works.

Construction

  • work exclusively with International Coastal Management who undertake all of the design, engineering specifications and environmental approval processes.
  • Bags are two or six ton capacity.
  • Bags are filled on site and placed in position by excavator according to design specification.
  • Beach protection often involves the wall being built to be covered at all times by beach sand. The wall becomes the backstop protection in heavy or prolonged bad weather situations that cause extensive erosion of the beach.
  • Sea groyne work provides a facility that is at least the equal of other material, such as rock, but with the added benefit of being more flexible should change be required and much more easily repaired and maintained as required.
